Lutheran World Relief

September’s Mission

Lutheran World Relief’s Mission: “Affirming God’s love for all people, we work with Lutherans and partners around the world to end poverty, injustice and human suffering.”

In 2015 LWR reached 4,057,849 people in 36 countries with 126 projects.

LWR works to improve the lives of millions of small-scale farmers and their families, and to help them adapt to and mitigate the effects of changing weather and environmental conditions.

When emergencies arise, LWR helps communities cope with and recover from emergencies in ways that promote lasting improvements in people’s living conditions.

Immanuel Lutheran Church not only donates money to this organization, members of the congregation make about 100 sturdy drawstring backpack-style cloth bags and donated school supplies are packed in each bag. These supplies mean the difference between getting an education or not for a child. In the places where LWR works, these supplies are more than many families can afford.

Imagine having to choose between a meal, or purchasing a notebook. Project Promise School Kits are sent to places where even the few required school supplies may be more than a family can afford. Pencils and paper can help write a positive future.

The following items should be included for each school kit:

--Four 70-sheet notebooks of wide or college-ruled paper approximately 8” x 10-1/2”; no loose-leaf paper

--One 30-centimeter ruler; or a ruler with centimeters on one side and inches on the other

--One pencil sharpener

--One blunt scissors (safety scissors with embedded steel blades work well)

--Five unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers; secured together with a rubber band

--Five black or blue ballpoint pens (no gel ink); secured together with a rubber band

--One box of 16 or 24 crayons

--One 2-1/2” eraser

All items should be new and in good condition. Remove any excess packaging. Please do not donate items with any religious symbols, messages, or congregation’s name, decorated with a U.S. flag, patriotic or military symbols, or references to the armed forces, including camouflage.

You may purchase all items for a kit or just individual components and place your items in the collection boxes in the narthex.

This year we may be purchasing the drawstring backpack-style cloth bags in which the items will be placed. Delivering School Kits to the children who need them most costs LWR about $1.40 per kit. If you would like to help with the cost, there will be a canister in the narthex for your donations (cash or checks made payable to Immanuel Lutheran Church.)

Many of the items listed are not very expensive if bought on sale. Sales have already started. Watch for the sales and shop early!

Thank you!
